Breckenridge Selected to Host the 2008 National Brotherhood of Skiers Annual Meeting
April 17, 2007 - 1:35 PM
By COskiing News
BRECKENRIDGE, Colorado -- The Breckenridge Resort Chamber and the Breckenridge Ski Resort announced the selection of Breckenridge, Colorado to host the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) – known as the largest winter sports organization in the United States – for their 2008 Annual Meeting and Challenge Cup (AMCC) to be held January 12-19. The AMCC is the NBS biennial convention and fundraiser, which is expected to bring more than 1,000 individuals representing 77 clubs from across the country for this week-long winter sports event. The 2008 AMCC will be the cornerstone of the NBS 35th anniversary celebration.
"We are proud to create a partnership with the NBS as it is a highly sought-after group by ski resort communities around the country," said Corry Mihm, the director of the Breckenridge Resort Chamber. "It is a privilege to welcome the NBS into our community and we are excited to share with them the friendliness and experiences Breckenridge is famous for."
The quaint Victorian mountain town of Breckenridge combined with the 2,300 acres of terrain that make-up Breckenridge Ski Resort will be the setting for all of the NBS annual convention events and activities including opening ceremonies, races, receptions, parties, annual and regional meetings, fundraisers and more.
"Breckenridge has a history of propelling new sports and teams of athletes into future Olympic competitions," said Lucy Kay, vice-president of marketing for Breckenridge Ski Resort. "We are very pleased to welcome young NBS athletes into the fold during their annual meeting."
The primary purpose of the AMCC is to demonstrate African American representation in winter sports and raise money for the NBS Olympic Scholarship Fund, designed to provide financial support for exceptional athletes of color who excel in winter sports. The intent is to propel these young athletes to Olympic and international competition. In addition, funds from this event support the operation of the NBS.
The NBS was founded in 1973 and chartered in 1974 by 13 African American ski clubs. Since that time, the organization has grown to over 77 clubs with a membership of more than 8,000 adults and youth.
